Brooke McMahan Introduction
Hello everyone!
My name is Brooke McMahan, I am a junior accounting major from Novi, MI.
I took this course because I want to become a better leader for a number of reasons. First of all, starting at the end of June I will be coaching a Running 101 class to help people new to the sport be able to complete a 5 kilometer race by the end of the 8 week course. This will be my first time ever coaching or leading such of large group of people, so I'm hoping this course will help prepare me for this new role I am taking on. Another reason for taking this course is because as an accounting major, I plan to enter the business world after completing my MS in accounting. My first job out of college will hopefully be working as an auditor at a public accounting firm. This position will require me to work with a number of fellow auditors and clients, so it is important for me to use leadership skills to help solve problems and work with others.
In addition to taking this course and coaching the Running 101 class mentioned above, I will also be interning full time at a public accounting firm called Plante Moran in their internal accounting department. This will be my first internship, so I really don't know what to expect just yet. It won't be starting until June, so I am looking forward to a few weeks off to take a bit of a break and prepare for that to begin.
An item that I think represents me being a leader is my running watch. I am on the cross country and track team, so having a running watch is pretty essential. When we are doing workouts, we are split into different pace groups and one person is designated to lead the group to hit a certain time over a particular distance. This spring was my first opportunity to begin leading my pace group, so I feel the running watch definitely represents me being a leader.
