Kate Osbourn Week 4

The first image that I choose from this week reminds me of an amazing wonderful lady named Aoy who owns a little Thai restaurant in Marquette MI  where I attended college called the Rice Paddy. Aoy is remarkable not because ran her restaurant single handedly for many years and has only recently hired a helping hand to do some cleaning, prep work, and to run the cash register. Aoy is not special because she takes off a Month every summer, and during this period of time she goes back to Thailand to her hometown where she visits her family.  No  Aoy is more than what she might appear to those passing through Marquette. Aoy is special she has a heart bigger than any person I think I have ever met. Every year with her hard earned money Aoy takes all of her tip money from the entire year at rice paddy, and uses it to  provide TWO schools with  the books and food to run the buildings for the year. Not only that, but Aoy buys shoes and uniforms for the students who cannot afford them. If you look up Operation AOY you can see the miracle that she works  (well with the use of tips )  This project has run every year for 16 years. In an article that I just read to check my facts I learned that Aoy was able to support a third school this last year.

The second picture that I choose is an activity for young girl scouts that reminds them that they are part of a larger community in a world, and that they are part of it. Girl Scouts is a service organization, and I believe that if we raise our children to value community country and world as well as family and self that our world will be a better place. Children who experience the joy of giving, sharing and helping those less fortunate will realize their potential to change the world.

Intelligence Leaker, or Whistleblower to be Protected ( You decide)
This article is about the 29 year old whistle blower who revealed places where he believes that the united states government has overstepped its boundaries in its surveillance of any and all Americans providing some members of the NSA to “wire tap” any citizen. His actions of disclosures have enabled the citizens of the US to make their own decision about what the government should and should not be allowed to do. Thinking about the rights that I believe I am given as a citizen I feel that wiretapping of any citizen without a judge signing off on the search and seizure of my electronic data. I agree with Edward that his actions were just. I worry for him, and his safety.  In the article he was asked if he believed that he had made a difference he said yes that because people were discussing, and talking about. I agree that he has made a difference, or at least opened the door to change. I think that he is a fantastic example of what I believe that ONE person can make a HUGE difference. Rosa Parks make her personal difference. These changes come with RISK, and they come with moments of uncertainty. I believe that I am willing to give up some safety for my privacy, and I for one and proud of Edward for helping us to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. It however will take more than Edward to see change out. People will need to invest their time into convincing congress to give our privacy back. I think that MORE people will need to COMMIT to making this change happen, or it won’t.
