Week 5: Joshua D. Vaughn

The first visual I have chosen to discuss this week relates to communication.  Being able to communicate effectively is a necessary part of the Collaboration element of the Social Change Model.  Our authors note that "it would be very difficult to engage in a successful and sustainable collaboration process without open communication among group members."  While all four of these communication skills are critical, I believe that it is important to focus on Listening.  It is common to be eager to present your opinion on an issue but hesitant to listen to the perspective of everyone else in the group.  A group will not have success without communication and effective communication must involve listening and being receptive to all of the opinions of the group.

Our authors explain that "the visions, aims, and values that are central to any group comprise the most general idea of Common Purpose."  I believe that this image very clearly shows the true essence of a shared vision.  Not all of the individuals shown in this visual are looking through the lens in exactly the same way, but eventually they will all see the same view.  While there will be different opinions and perspectives in a group, it is important to the Common Purpose that everyone comes to see the same goals and overall vision.
