Sheelagh McCarthy Week 6

I chose this image of a person doing yoga to represent Consciousness of Self. By practicing yoga, people become in touch not only with their body but with their mind as well. I think that yoga is not only an excellent form of exercise, but also a way to increase one's self awareness. Yoga forces you to concentrate on your breathing and movement, and through doing yoga, you learn more about yourself. I think it is very important to not only be aware of your body, but how your mind and body come together, which is reflected in the practice of yoga. In my experience, I have found that doing yoga strengthens your body and mind, because you must be so focused on the physical and mental movement of yourself.

To me the most obvious form and symbol of commitment is a wedding ring and marriage. Wedding rings are symbols of commitment, and committing yourself to being with and caring for someone for the rest of your life. I think that this is perhaps the most powerful type of commitment you can have. However, I do not believe it is limited to marriage, but commitments can be found in any type of relationship whether it be to your boyfriend, friends, or family. I think being committed to these people that mean the most to you in life is very important and can affect how you perceive and interact with the world. I think we are all at a time of our lives where establishing commitment can be difficult, whether its in a relationship, or a job, or moving to a new place, but makes us stronger as individuals and leaders when we can commit to something, someplace or someone.

I chose the Half the Sky Movement to demonstrate a current event reflecting congruency. The book and film are extremely powerful and hopes to empower men and women to stand up for the mistreatment of potentially half of the world's population, hence half the sky. Half the Sky refers to the abuse and neglect of women around the world.  It features many well known figures and celebrities including Somaly Mam, Hilary Clinton, and Meg Ryan. These well known women travel around the world advocating against the exploitation of women around the world. Issues range from lack of education, violence against women, and sex trafficking. I believe one of the most inspiring person in our time is Somaly Mam, a former sex slave that has now opened up a center for young women that have faced forced prostitution and abuse. She has created a place where girls live together and build relationships on love and respect. Somaly Mam is a well known speaker and advocate for women on a global scale. She was even mentioned in the U.S. Department of State's meeting about human trafficking. I believe she represents congruency because she is not only committed to her cause, but her every day life reflects her mission and values.
