Week 4 --Jiao Peng

two visuals about citizenship

This first picture is able to point out the key meaning of global citizenship-engagement. In the figure, four different ethnicities in various colors hold hands around our shared planet. Each individual is a part of the entire planet. Everyone engaged in the community and assume his/her own obligations.

The second picture is composed by some of terms what is related to the "citizenship”.  Nowadays, with the progress and the development of our society, the term ”citizenship” tends to be globalism. We should also see the entire planet as a whole - a big society. This definition of “citizens” is no longer limited by the countries’ boundaries. Everyone on the entire planet has his/her own responsibility. This means that everyone needs to participate. It’s like what we learnt from the textbook, “effective democracy requires individual responsibility. “ Certainly, the individual rights are also needed. Further, in order to ensure the rights and safety of our own, we will inevitably be deprived of certain rights such as doing something what will hurts others’ legitimate rights. This is the meaning of tolerance. In addition, we need to show our respect to the judiciary. Those are all I got from the picture, and I do strongly agree with the views it illustrated.

Recently, The International Committee of Red Cross is marking the 30th anniversary of its Water and Habitat Unit. Water in rural areas is often scarce, poor in quality and difficult to collect, especially during a conflict. This project is committed to help ensure that people have access to this vital resource using affordable technologies and sustainable solutions. In my opinion, this project perfectly reflected on one of key forms of individual civic engagement - direct help. This organization used the real sense of social responsibility to help others who need help. In the meantime,  ICRC also lots of other similar projects to help people in need. Socially responsible volunteers involved. They appeal the community to save resource of water, and even put some efforts on the education about this project. Meanwhile, it also helps to constitute citizenship. I love this project with no doubt. Our society is precisely able to become even better because these responsible people.
