I chose this clip to illustrate Individual Commitment. This
video was an ongoing sensation throughout my community, Michigan State and even
globally last year…and has even continued to make a difference still today.
Jacob made a personal connection to everything that was going on in his life
and has made it his life passion and individual commitment to live by the words
Everybody Love Everybody, and through his commitment and story, he is inspiring
others to join with him against bullying.
This quote by Eleanor Roosevelt has always stuck with me.
“Do what you feel in your heart to be right- for you’ll be criticized anyway.”
It demonstrates an important aspect of Conscious of Self. For to be a good
leader, you must seek inside for self-approval, rather than the approval of
others. Knowing who you are and what you stand for, and not being afraid to
take voice your opinion plays a large part in ones own conscious of self. Yes,
you want to be mindful of others and their ideas, and grow and change; however
you do not want to let your voice and ideas be overpowered. No body will like
every idea you throw out there, but if you can’t let that stop you from doing
what you feel is the right thing.

CURRENT EVENT CONNECTION:
To be congruent, a person must be authentic in their
commitment towards whatever cause, person, idea or attitude they are passionate
about. It should not be forced or externally motivated. It should be 100%
dedication to whatever it is that you believe in, you shouldn’t just talk the
talk, but walk the walk. In this current event connection, many may look at it
as superficial, or not as an act of courage, but I found that Angelina Jolie’s
recent decision to have a double mastectomy was a good example of the courage
to act congruently. Angelina is in the public eye, and through the loss of her
mother at age 52 of ovarian cancer; the star was motivated to be committed to
breast and ovarian cancer awareness. By taking the test, and having the
procedure, she has now shed a spotlight on the topic and is encouraging
thousands of women to go get tested, and take whatever precautions are
necessary.
