Week 6: Joshua D. Vaughn

Week 6 Visuals

The first visual I have chosen for this week represents the importance of Consciousness of Self.  I felt that while this image is comical, it shows how often we fail to be aware of our personal values and attitudes.  If you are not able to be self-aware, you will have trouble standing for what you believe and face additional challenges.  It may be difficult to face the truth in certain situations, but it is necessary to be a successful leader.

The image below represents the value of Commitment.  Tiger Woods has been one of the world's greatest golfers for years.  Although he has been at the top of the world rankings, he has changed his swing multiple times to further improve his game.  Our authors note that leaders must have a "need to achieve," which means always challenging yourself and working to exceed your highest standards.  Tiger practicing on the driving range in the image below shows his "need to achieve" and Commitment to being the greatest player he can be.

Current Event Connection

One of the largest political issues of recent concern has been gun control.  The link below is to an article which explains the federal government’s progress on the issue.  Though he has faced a significant amount of opposition, President Barack Obama has remained true to his values and pushed for support in the House of Representatives and the Senate.  Our authors explain that Congruence requires an individual to be aware of their personal beliefs and to then be genuine and “walk the talk.”  President Obama is exhibiting this value by pushing for stronger gun controls laws, which has always been his position on the issue.  It is so critical that politicians at all levels maintain this level of Congruence and support their positions.  Especially in the field of politics, it is common for individuals to say one thing and do another.  It inspires confidence in constituents when a politician is true to their word and follows through on their ideas, as our President is doing here.
