Week 4 Post: Curtis Kocher

Even though I feel this is kind of cliché, I think voting is a major act of citizenship. Voting people into office is a privilege that is not held by many people around the world and this form of individual civic engagement is a major way to bring change into a society. Connecting this back to the chapter, the act of voting forces it citizens to play an active role in their society by understanding local, national, and global communities. It also shows that the citizens who do vote, actually want to make a change within their community. I feel this photo is a good example of citizenship because the character in the photo is deciding on whom he wants to vote for so they can help make a better change for his society.

Another aspect of citizenship that I feel is very important is actually engaging in it. Actually going out and taking part is a key ingredient of helping create social change and it also show that one can be a global change agent. This is the second photo I found that represents citizenship. My interpretation of this photo is doctor that has traveled across the globe to help people who are sick. Two forms of Individual Civic Engagement that I feel this person is taking part of is Direct Service and Community Research. This person is giving her time to help people who are in need and she is also learning and informing people around the world what problems are affecting this area.

 CURRENT EVENTS CONNECTION: WEEK 4

The current event I chose for this week’s current events connection is the television show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which airs on ABC. For those that do not know, this show is about a group of people who gather a community together and help build a new home for someone who has faced a lot of hardship. To me this show brings together a lot of individual civic engagement, but the one that stands out the most to me would have to be direct service. As stated in the book, direct service is defined as giving personal time and energy to address community needs. Each person who helps build the new houses has taken time out of their day or week in order to help build a house. It also helps build each volunteers self worth and camaraderie. The other individual civic engagements that I feel it show shows are philanthropic giving. Stores like Sears donate tons of money to the show in order to help fund for the building of the new homes.
