Week 6 Kathryn Osbourn visuals, and current event

Know yourself, and from getting to know your strengths and weaknesses you can be a more effective person. This reminded me of some of the lessons that I learned when I read the book 7 habits for highly effective people during my senior year. The first thing according to the book is to be proactive to know yoru decisions and then to acknowledge them ,and take responsibility for your choices. This taking responsibility for your choices comes easily once you have really come to understand what those choices you are making mean not only to you, but to the people around you.

In Hawaii the tradition if the lei goes much deeper than the a way of greeting visitors to the island. The lei has many symbols, traditional lei are not thrown away, or treated lightly they are symbols with deeper meaning. I still have our lei's from our Hawaiian wedding, and they have similar meaning to the rings that people wear during and after their weddings. Long Maile  ropes are tied across the entrances of businesses, and hung across the shoulders of people for many occasions. The lei is tied after vows are said at a wedding which symbolizes strength courage, love, honor, and respect. In our ceremony my husbands lei was left open until after we said our vows at which point I was instructed to loop his lei together forming a permanent circle.

For my current event I choose an event that could be a great example of congruence for more than one reason. The supreme court of the united states exists to uphold the constitution of the United States which is a very large responsibility especially having read this chapter about how people should be congruent with themselves to be the most effective leaders. In the case of the supreme court the Justices are required to uphold a document which may not always have values that may lead them to hand down decisions they may not even truly agree with. Another reason that this is a great decision based upon congruence is that when Supreme Court Justices take their positions they realize that they are committing themselves to uphold the single most important document that our country has. If it weren't for their commitment then the basis for our laws would not be anything more than a piece of paper.
