Current Event Connection
A global community service project that I am actually a participant of is the international organization Active Water. This is an organization that is actively fighting the World Water Crisis by supplying clean water to those in need, particularly to those in Africa where clean water is so extremely rare. The organization raises money to supply the clean water by sponsoring runners and events of athletes who run long distance races, cycle, swim, or do any combination event of these. Active Water raises money through these events to build wells and water supplies in places of need where the World Water Crisis is at its worst. This came to mind the entire time I was reading these weeks chapter because it embraces the idea of individual effort leading to global change. The organization sponsors individuals who then form teams who raise money and awareness for this cause and the organization collectively has a global impact. For anyone in the class who is interested in getting involved, I would highly recommend doing so. You can get some pretty awesome gear that they sponsor you with and raise money for an amazing cause all at once! Check out the link below:
Two Visuals For Week 4
The following image speaks volumes to me about global change. I think that this really embraces the idea of individual civic engagement. This shows that although it is the soldier's duty to serve the country and follow orders, he is still willing to help those and live in harmony with those that he doesn't necessarily "have to" care for. I just really think that this represents what each of us should have in mind when we see those in need no matter what situation we find ourselves in or where we are.
The next image, in my opinion, just shows the unity of the world despite all of the fighting, conflict, war, and disputing that is taking place. It is a great symbol to remind us that we are all one people, and we were all created equal and meant to live together and with each other, not against each other. Global change and international change is only accomplished if we can all learn to live together and work toward one common goal; this is an image to keep this fresh in our heads.
