Two Visuals and Current Event: Scott Besko

I chose these two pictures because they represent citizenship to me.  Volunteering and voting are both great ways to get involved in your community, State, or Country.  You can volunteer at a local food bank or soup kitchen, or you can help clean up a city park.  You can vote for your city council, governor, or for the president of the United States.  All these things represent citizenship to me because they all are ways to get involved and make positive change.

Current Event:

I chose to do my current event on the issue of global warming.  I have always been interested in global warming and this assignment was a great way for me to research things that are going on in the news with it.  The news article I found engages in the "Advocacy and Education" form of individual civic engagement.  The article is called "San Diego Professor Taking Global Warming Fight to the Markets."  This article says that if the fight over global warming is ever to be won, it will be in the economic arena.    Gary Waayers, a biology professor in San Diego began a petition to convince the state of California teachers retirement system to divest its entire portfolio of carbon fuel stocks.  Waayers has made great strides and ideas like these are starting to spread.  Experts say if enough pension systems like the one in California decides to divest in all carbon fuel stocks the stocks will be worth nothing and will crash like the housing market did.  This relates to this week's topic of citizenship because Gary Waayers is getting involved in his community and being a leader in the fight against global warming.  It's in the "Advocacy and Education" form of individual civic engagement because Waayers is educating people on global warming and explaining how divesting in all carbon fuel stocks will help fight it.
