Week 4 Brooke McMahan

I chose this image to represent what we learned about citizenship this week. Citizenship is about an individual  that takes action to serve a greater community. This image shows a US soldier in Iraq who is reaching out to a community to help them rebuild. He is helping the Iraqi community and representing our country as well.

Next, I chose this image because I think it shows citizenship in a different way. Rather than one particular person reaching out to a community, this image shows a variety of different people reaching out to our entire planet. Citizenship can take place on a big scale, which this image clearly is representing.

Current Event Connection: Im sure many of us have heard about the devastating tornadoes that have hit Oklahoma in the last few weeks. In an effort to help raise money for the community, the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority hosted a telethon which raised over seven thousand dollars for the salvation army and Oklahoma tornado relief. This is an excellent example of citizenship because first it shows how the Oklahomans are coming together in a time of need to help their community. It also shows how this group, the OETA is devoting time to help raise money for the good of their state. I think this definitely exemplifies philanthropic giving, a form of individual civic engagement. By Oklahomans donating their time and money towards the tornado relief effort, the greater community is benefiting significantly. The support seen here allows the community to come together and reach out to those who need help the most.
