I have a friend that runs an organic garden at the apartment complex he lives in. The members that live there volunteer time to grow their own food. They then get to eat the food that they grow themselves. My friend has talked about how much it has brought their little community together and that they learn so much from each other. I think that this is a great way to grow and bring the community together.
Another way to contribute to your community is through direct service. volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line to help keep their communities safe. Many firefighters do not even receive payment for their service as they donate their time and effort to make the area they live in safe for other members.

I chose an article that talks about the forest fires in California and New Mexico causing a lot of damage to communities. Through direct service hundreds of firefighters have been fighting the fires as they have been burning down houses and cabins and they will need to be rebuilt. They are working hard to try and contain the fires to prevent further damage. They had to evacuate many people out of their homes to avoid citizens being caught in the blaze. These firefighters are putting their lives on the line for their communities and for the people that comprise them. They are directly affecting the places they live through their actions and the line of work that they do. These men and women are leaders in their own right because it takes a special person to put yourself in danger for the greater good. We owe these people our lives for stepping up to face a natural disaster such as this.
