Week 6 Brooke McMahan

I thought this picture was a perfect example of commitment. After our country took such a serious hit in 2001, by the firefighters putting up the American flag at the sight of the world trade centers, hope was restored. The flag was a symbol our society coming together to rebuild. After this day, out country came together and had to commit to help make our nation a better place.

This image accurately depicted consciousness of self. Our book describes this C as understanding who we are and using that to create change. By understanding values, dreams, goals, and self-concept, we individually become the best we can be. In order to step up into a leadership role become change agents, we need to know where we come from and what is important to us.

Current Event Connection:

One of our topics this week from the Social Change Model was congruence. Congruence is displayed through individuals who have their own beliefs and values and actually act in accordance with those. The article I picked out describes a young girl's commitment to helping the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. She talks about how her elementary school has a Value Code, and one of them is concern for others. The school promotes these ideas to the kids. The young girl, Lindsey Bartlett, takes this value and acts in a time when our country really needed it. She sold one dollar bracelets at her school, and was able to raise $675 dollars. In order for her to do this with the help of her school, she had to get it approved. The school puts on many charities but is unable to become involved in all of them. She had to present to school administrators, and later address the entire student body, for all of this to happen. She took the values she believed in and decided to act upon it, by helping the victims in the bombing. This girl clearly displayed congruence throughout this fundraiser.
